Alcarras was my first ever Pacedaze track event. It was also the first time I ever shipped my bike anywhere on a lorry - a frightening experience that led someone to say I looked like a dad sending his kid off to school for the first time. He was dead right, I felt sick watching it fork-lifted onto the artic! As usual these days, most of the other riders had track bikes, nearly all with slicks and tyre warmers and so for someone with a road bike on road tyres (like me), there was a mild sense that I might be among faster company. I wasn't wrong!

I needn't have worried about my bike, unloading it on the first morning, it was still absolutely mint and unmarked and while the sessions were very fast from the get-go, track etiquette was polite and safe. I was passed by way more people than I returned the favour to, but only once in three days did anyone get uncomfortably close. To give you an idea, out of 63 sessions for 3 groups over 3 days, I'm pretty sure only 3 were red flagged and there were only 4 (maybe 5) people who slid off. I've seen that happen in a single morning on some British track days, so that tells you it's safe even if if is pretty darn fast.

I didn't bother with instruction and I probably should have. As usual it was available for a fee, but also, there were other instructors helping out who'd spot you for a single session without a set fee. There was suspension help, tyre-fitting and most of all, sunshine in October!

Value for money was good too with the Pacedayz bill which included the hotel) only a fraction more than any 3 usual track days in the UK. On top of that you need flights which are very cheap with Easyjet or Ryan Air, transport to and from the pickup points for shipping your bike overseas, a rental car at the other end (I shared with 3 others) and that's it. Other expenses like food, fuel etc, would be incurred in any case and if you've ever stopped at a hotel prior to a UK trackday you can even subtract that from the comparative cost too. Overall, I spent about double the Pacedayz fee one way and another and think that was pretty good.

I'll definitely do it again. I'll probably put slicks on and I'll certainly have tyre warmers and I'll hope to see some of the same faces belonging to the fast, but friendly and helpful men and women who went this last time. They were a really good bunch of decent folks. Well done Pacedayz, you put on a good do!
